Jealousy and Insecurity in Relationships | EFT Guide
Jealousy is one of those feelings that nobody really wants to admit to. It can feel embarrassing, even shameful. But here's the truth: almost everyone experiences jealousy at some point in a relationship. The problem isn't the feeling itself. The problem is what happens when jealousy takes the wheel.
If you or your partner struggle with jealousy or insecurity, you're not broken. But understanding what's really going on underneath those feelings can make a huge difference — for both of you.
**Where Jealousy Really Comes From**
Most people think jealousy is about distrust. Sometimes it is. But more often, jealousy is rooted in fear — fear of losing someone you love, fear of not being enough, fear of being left behind.
Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, helps couples look underneath the surface emotion to find what's really driving the behavior. EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, and it's one of the most well-researched approaches to couples therapy available. At its core, EFT says this: we are wired for connection. When we feel that connection is threatened, we react — sometimes in ways that push our partner further away.
Jealousy is often what EFT therapists call a "secondary emotion." It's the feeling you see on the outside. But underneath it is usually something softer and more vulnerable — loneliness, fear, or a deep need for reassurance.
**The Cycle That Hurts You Both**
Here's how it often plays out. One partner feels insecure and starts checking their partner's phone, asking repeated questions, or pulling away to protect themselves. The other partner feels accused or smothered and gets defensive or distant. That distance makes the insecure partner feel even more afraid. So they push harder. And the cycle keeps spinning.
Gottman research calls this kind of pattern a "negative cycle" — and it's one of the biggest predictors of relationship breakdown. Neither person is the villain. Both people are hurting. But the pattern itself becomes the problem.
The goal isn't to stop having feelings. The goal is to interrupt the cycle before it does real damage.
**What Insecurity Does Over Time**
Even in genuinely loving relationships, chronic jealousy and insecurity wear things down. Trust erodes. Resentment builds. The partner who feels constantly suspected starts to shut down emotionally. The partner who feels insecure starts to feel more alone, even while clinging tighter.
Over time, both partners can start to feel like they're walking on eggshells. Conversations that should be easy become loaded. Small things — a late reply, a laugh with a coworker — become evidence of something bigger.
This is why it matters to address jealousy early, before it becomes the defining story of your relationship.
**Try This: The Underneath Exercise**
This is a simple exercise you can try together today. It works best when you're both calm — not in the middle of an argument.
Sit together and take turns finishing these sentences out loud:
- "When I feel jealous, what I'm really afraid of is..."
- "What I need most from you when I feel that way is..."
- "One thing that helps me feel more secure in our relationship is..."
The listener's only job is to hear their partner without defending or explaining. Just listen. Then switch.
This exercise comes from the heart of EFT — moving from reactive emotions to vulnerable ones. When you can say "I'm scared of losing you" instead of "Why were you texting her?" — everything shifts. Your partner can respond to fear with comfort. It's much harder to respond to accusation with warmth.
**There Is a Way Through**
Jealousy and insecurity don't have to define your relationship. With the right tools and support, couples learn to recognize the cycle, slow it down, and reach for each other instead of pulling apart. That's what healing looks like — not the absence of hard feelings, but a new way of moving through them together.
If this resonates with you, you don't have to figure it out alone. At Align Counseling, we work with couples across Pennsylvania via telehealth, using EFT and other evidence-based approaches to help you break the cycle and rebuild real security.
